Vicubites

A premium pet food brand on Shopify Plus, blending B2C and B2B, built on Horizon with custom theme blocks, autoship and a typed data model.

Context

Vicubites sells premium dog and cat food to two audiences on the same store: pet owners who buy once or on autoship, and vet clinics, pet shops and groomers who buy wholesale. The catalog is nutrition-heavy (proteins, life stages, ingredients), so most product information is data, not prose.

Approach

  • Native first. Horizon, Search & Discovery and Shopify Subscriptions cover most needs; custom code goes only where they stop.
  • Typed data instead of tags. Nine custom product metafields and an Ingredient metaobject drive filters, product page blocks and ingredient pages, all editable by the merchant.
  • Reusable theme blocks. Badge, Benefit, Ingredients and Purchase options work in any section that accepts blocks.
  • Progressive enhancement. Every interactive piece (calculator, autoship picker, filters) has a working no-JavaScript baseline.

Process

Each feature starts as a spec with acceptance criteria and an estimate, ships through a pull request with a self review, and passes Theme Check with no errors before merge.
